Photography

This program focuses on developing students' art in photography from scratch. Understanding the fundamentals of how to use a camera and composition techniques in order to create a compelling story through still images and learning how to put together and lead their own creative projects. This creative expression is a powerful tool while providing artists with their own voice. When used for advocacy, it can help communities that feel unheard to be seen and acknowledged. Each scholar’s project aims to bring awareness within their community. We are excited to see them using their art for positive change and becoming leaders among their peers.

2024

This year the photographers used their cameras to take snapshots of the challenges immigrants must go through, bringing attention to gender norms and stereotypes, and the loss of a friend from gun violence. During this process, the photographers were intentional about the topics their cameras captured.

2023

The photography cohort worked hard this year. After building on the foundations of photography, Good Foot released more merchandise and they became the lead photographers for the shoot with the support of the photography mentor. The scholars were challenged to bring light to issues they have seen around them and what their community is facing, topics such as men’s mental health, signs of despair going unnoticed in everyday life, and different cultures coming together in Seattle.

2022

Photographers learned about the mechanics and different ways of capturing photos and editing them to create effects and bring out emotions. Photography opened up opportunities for the mentees such as working in yearbook and being hired to capture special moments for events. They also supported with Good Foot’s merchandise photoshoot. This cohort highlighted themes they saw around their community such as gentrification, displacement, the effects of violence, and family.
