Graphic Design/Illustration
Scholars develop their artistic skills to express themselves through visual art. Using graphic design and illustration they bring awareness to social issues that are important to them. Personal artivist (art + activism) projects of their own choice and public service announcement posters are some of the pieces scholars create and will be exhibited at two of our large events in the fall and winter.
2024
This year all of our cohort members wanted to learn how to paint with acrylic. We were lucky enough to have Miss Nakema join us as a contracted teaching artist to mentor our scholars in their journey with painting. With the skills they learned from Miss Nakema they created works of art focused on mental health, identity, body positivity and culture.
We even had a special workshop day using aerosol paint where the scholars made custom painted clothing.
2023
Our artists took time to give back to their community to bring awareness to causes they want to advocate for not just in their art mediums but also through volunteering. They helped out at WSCADV’s Refuse to Abuse 5k and show up for their community. Scholars also assisted in facilitating art sessions during Power UP! Summer programming with their mentors. Each scholar this year created visual art/design pieces that addressed issues that they wanted to highlight: Teen LGBTQ houselessness, global warming, and mental health.
2022
Partnered with the NO Excuses cohort to create illustrations for the NO Excuses Activity Booklet. This was an opportunity to experience working with a “client.” During this project, they learned, developed, and implemented professional skills such as: public presentation, storyboarding, peer critique and iteration, customer relations, time management, and project management. Each scholar created visual art/design pieces that addressed issues that were important to them.
